How far would you go to achieve your dreams, and how much of yourself would you be willing to sacrifice along the way? Based on an unbelievable true story, California Schemin’ follows two young Scottish friends who attempt to break into the hip-hop industry by pretending to be something they’re not.
The film follows Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain, two aspiring rappers from Scotland who dream of making it big in the music industry. Unfortunately, their Scottish accents make it difficult for anyone to take them seriously. After being laughed off stage during an audition, the pair come to believe that their nationality is the only thing standing between them and success. Rather than giving up, they come up with a ridiculous but surprisingly effective plan: reinvent themselves as American rappers from California.

What starts as a desperate attempt to be taken seriously quickly becomes something much bigger than either of them imagined. Their fake identities begin opening doors that were previously closed, eventually leading to a record deal and a taste of the celebrity lifestyle. Suddenly, the two friends find themselves surrounded by money, parties, alcohol, drugs, and the kind of attention they had always dreamed of receiving.
One of the most interesting aspects of California Schemin’ is how it explores the relationship between fame and identity. At first, the deception feels almost harmless, especially when the audience understands why the two friends felt they needed to lie in the first place. However, as their success grows, the film gradually shifts from a humorous underdog story into something more serious. What began as a clever scheme to get noticed becomes an increasingly complicated situation in which the characters struggle to separate their real identities from the personas they have created.

The friendship between the two leads is also central to the film. Their shared ambition initially brings them together, but the pressures of success begin to expose the cracks in their relationship. It’s interesting to watch how two people who wanted the exact same thing can slowly lose sight of what brought them together in the first place.
James McAvoy’s directorial debut balances humour with the darker consequences of chasing fame. There is something genuinely entertaining about watching two Scottish guys convince the music industry that they’re from California, particularly because the story is based on real events. Yet beneath the absurdity is a surprisingly relatable message about wanting to be accepted and feeling the need to change yourself to fit other people’s expectations.

Ultimately, California Schemin’ is an entertaining and surprisingly thoughtful film about ambition, friendship, and the price of success. Beyond the outrageous premise, it raises an interesting question: is achieving your dreams really worth it if you have to pretend to be someone else to get there? It’s a story that proves truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction, while reminding audiences that success means very little if you lose yourself along the way.
California Schemin’ is available in theatres on Friday, October 9th, 2026.
