  1. I love this movie (and this review)! I can’t remember how old I was when I first watched it but I definitely remember how much I resonated with it.
Like you said, the characters are the classic dismissed underdogs, right down to Sloth. But they’re just kids, entering adolescence, and afraid of the resignation that characterizes their perception of adulthood. One-eyed Willie and his map is the in-breaking of childhood fantasy into reality.
But more importantly it gives them a purpose. Like you said, they know what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. In a world that is entirely out of their control these kids discover their own agency, they can make a difference. “Goonies never say die.” The map offers them a way into an “adulthood” that looks very different from the one to which they’ve become accustomed.
Thanks for adding this to your list of reviewed movies! I love your articles and I’m looking forward to the next one!
