This movie is going to be a cult classic. Exciting, thrilling, and action-packed with a killer soundtrack, Kaniehtiio Horn absolutely crushes it with her directorial debut.
In Seeds, Ziggy’s (Horn) life is on the up and up. Living in what feels like the most expensive city in Canada, she lands a brand deal with Natures Oath – a seed and fertilizer company that pays well and takes her influencer status to the next level. When she is asked to housesit for her cousin, played by the hilarious Dallas Goldtooth, her newly secured life receives some bad news.
Do not sleep on this movie because it is CAMP. It feels like an adult episode of Goosebumps with all the necessary action, horror and cozyness one would expect. The immersion of Horn’s principles, Indigenous identity and way of life blended with elements of classic horror storytelling (city girl goes to a cottage in the woods and scary things happen) revive this trope in a refreshing way. The chemistry between Horn and Goldtooth is believable and they do not skip a beat in their dynamic on-screen. Supporting actors Dylan Cook, Meegwun Fairbrother and Canadian icon, Graham Greene, keep the balance between drama and comedy that keeps audiences engaged and wanting more.
What made this movie special for me were two things: the soundtrack and the energy. Watching this, the passion and joy that went into making this movie from the cast and crew emanates through the screen, I could feel through their performances how excited everyone was to be apart of this film. And the music! Movie soundtracks are a lost art form in the film industry and they hard to get right. In Seeds, the music doesn’t miss, the soundtrack manages the blend nostalgia with commercial appeal for songs many people may not have heard before. Horn is a professional, the music selection came from her soul and technical understanding of what makes a movie good.
I truly loved this film, it was a labour of love from everyone involved. Horn has achieved much success already (Reservation Dogs, Alice Darling) but this film, I feel, is a taste of someone who is going to blow us all away with what she can do as a filmmaker and storyteller.
Check out the film at TIFF here, and add this movie to your spooky season watchlist.
