Does the world need Superman anymore?
That’s the question raised in the latest trailer for James Gunn’s highly anticipated reboot of the Man of Steel. With David Corenswet taking on Kal-El’s suit and (freshly cleaned) boots, the new footage suggests that not everyone wants Supes to interfere with world events. After all, this is a man who, by his own admission, intervenes based on his own feelings. He has no government oversight and is able to interfere in other people’s affairs without opposition. In the new trailer, Gunn has highlighted the tension of an era that simply doesn’t feel like any one person should be able to make those decisions. After all, it’s a complicated world. What gives Supes the right to intervene?
But, maybe, that’s how Gunn is going to save Superman.
After the darker-edged Man of Steel tried to make Kal-El relatable and, almost, human. Gunn’s take seems like he’s trying to give Superman back his innocence. He wants to save lives. He wants to prevent wars. The new trailer reminds us of the moral integrity that was once made the character the gold standard of hero morality. Although he’s come from outside of us, Kal-El was always meant to showcase the best of us.
But, in Gunn’s latest trailer, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be an easy ride.
James Gunn’s Superman will be unleashed in theatres and IMAX on July 11th, 2025.
