I was very excited for The Difficult Bride. Transforming the unrealistic standards women, especially brides, are given into a body horror sounds captivating to me, and The Difficult Bride delivers on the horror.

Zaineen (Zaineen Chowdhury Karim) prepares for her wedding by doing what every bride in her world does – hair treatments, facials, spa treatments, getting poked and criticised for weeks leading up to the big day. She seems okay with these at first, doing what must be done to get to spending the rest of her life with her perfect fiancé who supports her dreams.

But slowly, she is haunted by visions of a dead bride, marks and bumps that appear on her skin out of nowhere, and things that slither and hide within the glam. At the same time, she realises that the preparation period she’s in is really just a gilded cage.

Directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, The Difficult Bride does an excellent job of blending the body horror with horror-horror. The film mythologises the bride who died while getting ready for her wedding (a story that Hossain says she grew up hearing) further by having her as a character who sends out warnings from an unseen place. On the other hand, the body horror of The Difficult Bride is intimate. With bumps and scratches on Zaineen’s inner thighs and unknown critters crawling under her skin, the film puts the viewer, very uncomfortably, in her shoes. In doing this, the “beauty is pain” idea is put on full display. What does that actually mean for the people who undergo it?

A big part of the film is Zaineen’s choice, the moments she realises it has been taken from her, and the moments where her fight to keep it bring dire consequences. Still, one can’t help but see that the people who suffer this most are the people below her in class, specifically a beautician who risks her life and income for Zaineen when she realises how stuck she is.

In saying that, The Difficult Bride asks if the pain that comes with “beauty” is worth it.
