Directed by Scott Anthony Cavalheiro, Plan C tells the story of Claire (Claire Cavalheiro), a woman on the run with her ailing brother, Danny (Daniel De Santo). With the police in hot pursuit, Claire is becoming increasingly desperate as her brother’s health declines rapidly. Frantic and terrified, the two take a plastic surgery clinic hostage in an frantic attempt to get Danny the help he needs.

Grounded and gritty, Plan C is a furious independent thriller that fires on all cylinders. From the opening credit sequence, the director immerses the viewer into the chaos of his world. Even so, much of the film’s success lies at the feet of the erratic but endearing Claire. As Claire, Claire Cavaliero (wife of Scott Anthony) is utterly fascinating to watch. In some moments, she’s unhinged, leaning into the character’s fury. Even so, in others, she allows her compassionate and caring side to break through her hardened exterior. As such, even in her darkest moments, we sense that her actions stem from love. She’s wild but warm;

But Plan C has more on its mind than criminal mayhem. By highlighting Danny’s battle for survival, Cavalheiro also points to brokenness inherent to the medical system. Caught between life and death, the roadblocks that Danny faces reveal the injustices inherent in a system designed to prioritize the wealthy. And Claire’s determination to work around seems to only make things worse. This is a world that seems without hope, even though there are some who are compassionate enough to try.

Almost surprisingly though, Plan C also wants to have a conversation about facing fate. As Claire fights tirelessly for her brother’s life, she continues to look for signs that this is ‘supposed to happen’. This sort of dialogue can almost catch the viewer off guard, especially given what’s at stake. Even so, without giving spoilers, Cavalheiro’s storytelling ensures that this topic is handled with maturity and a complexity that is genuinely compelling.
