Despicable Me 3: Oh, Brother!

December 5, 2017 by Jacob Sahms Leave a Comment

Boasting a cast that includes Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig, Julie Andrews, Steve Coogan, Miranda Cosgrove, Trey Parker, Jenny Slate, and others, Despicable Me 3 finds Gru working for the Anti-Villain League … briefly. This allows Gru, his wife Lucy, and the adorable children they’ve adopted to meet Gru’s long-lost brother, Dru. And Dru wants Gru’s help to learn how to be a villain, again, for the first time.

While we’ve had two Despicable films and a Minions interlude, this allows for yet another exploration of the highs and lows of family. We already have plenty to consider with the partnership of Lucy and Gru, as well as the adoption of Margo, Edith, and Agnes, but now, a family reunion becomes part of the problem… and the solution.

What are we called to be and how do we handle our own evil inclinations? For Gru, he’s run from evil and become a “good guy,” but now he’s challenged to be evil by his brother’s desire to be like their evil supervillain father. It’s an interesting aside in the midst of a film aimed at getting our chuckles from those pint-sized troublemaking Minions and the reluctant heroism of Gru. When family comes calling, most of us know there are heightened tensions and expectations, but for Gru, this is a whole new ballgame.

Special features on the Blu-ray combo pack include the all-new mini movie, “The Secret Life of Kyle,” some more “Minion Moments,” character profiles of the characters and the actors who voice them, the “making of” featurette, the development of Gru’s brother as a character, the AVL Files showing off the organization Gru sometimes works for, the “Freedonia Visitors Guide,” several ‘infomercials’ featuring the characters, a singalong with Pharrell and his “Yellow Light” music video, and “Minion Mugshots.”
