Nacer (Samir Guesmi) is a man that works hard for what he has. He’s got a great relationship with his wife, Farrah (Meriem Medjkane), and his children, who attend a prestigious school. But even though he’s rich in relationships, his pay at his job does not reflect the amount of work he’s putting in, and with all his expenses, he’s barely getting by. Nacer tries multiple ways to gain more income, but all his efforts fail. So, when he’s introduced to a wealthy family that’s part of the school, Nacer goes after what he believes he’s worth himself.
The Cost of Heaven, directed by Mathieu Denis, and based on a true story, asks when one can reach contentment through its main character. What unfolds in this film is truly avoidable, but Nacer’s pride makes it so that he can’t stop himself.
This film is a good thriller, keeping you invested because you understand how Nacer got to where he is, but you do still believe he is good and want him to make better decisions each time he is presented with a choice.
The cast does an amazing job playing the different classes, and I especially want to shout out the child actors who are so incredible in their roles and are major contributors to the investment the audience has in the film and in Nacer’s decisions.
The Cost of Heaven is now playing at TIFF ’25. For more information, click here.
