Esau – Sibling Rivalry with Biblical Echoes

We didn’t need psychologists to tell us about sibling rivalry. Any parent with two children will be familiar with the concept (as will anyone with brothers or sisters). It is certainly present in biblical stories, starting with Cain and Abel. The sibling rivalry story that is most involved  in the Bible is that of Jacob and Esau (beginning in Genesis 25). That story echoes throughout Esau, a English language film from Russian-French director Pavel Lungin based on a novel by Israeli author Meir Shalev.

Hearing that his father is ailing, Esau (Lior Ashkenazi), a writer living in the US, returns to Israel to visit his family he left 20 years ago. There he must confront his embittered twin brother Jacob (Mark Ivanir), who has taken over the family bakery. Their father Abraham (Harvey Keitel) is in failing health and deteriorating mentally. Esau begins to write about his family history, flashing back to their youth when both brothers (played by Yoav Rotman and Lion Ravich) were in love with the same girl, Lea (Shira Haas), who eventually marries Jacob. Jacob’s daughter Romy (Omer Goldman) finds in her uncle someone to appreciate her as Jacob does not, which adds to the tension the brothers are dealing with.

We also see the troubled family life the two boys faced with their stubborn and angry father (played in the flashbacks by Omri Raveh) and their mother Sara (Yulia Peresild) who tries to placate him. The two boys have different personalities. Esau is bookish and favored by his mother, while Jacob is more like his father. (Those familiar with the biblical narrative may note that this is a reversal, one of many.)

The dissonance between this story and the biblical one could in part be explained by this being Esau’s story. The biblical account is really a pro-Jacob story. But the way this both is and is not a biblical story reminds us that the stories we read in the bible are not just moral lessons or legends. They are very much our stories. We can see ourselves in the stories of the patriarch, the kings, the prophets. Watching Esau and Jacob navigate their family and personal barriers, we know that we have lived through such times.

Bread is very much a part of this family and the story. Jacob is continuing the family bakery business. The book Esau has written before the story begins is a book about bread. (But he tells someone at a signing that he’s not a baker, he just writes about bread.) When we see the family during the boys’ youth, we see the whole family working dough and making bread. Bread is not just their business, it is their lives. So it is appropriate that when reconciliation between Esau and Jacob becomes a possibility, it is shown by them breaking bread together

Ready Player One: Real Life

I have completely forgotten the title of the story. I have forgotten what magazine I read it in. I have even forgotten most of its plot.

All I remember is the protagonist visiting another character she met online, only to discover her initial thoughts were completely incorrect.  The other person lived in a very small studio apartment and spent nearly his entire waking existence ‘living’ inside virtual worlds via cartridges he inserted into a head mounted device he wore. What was a reality to him was a virtual existence to others.*

Every time I think about virtual reality and the possibilities it can hold for our quickly deteriorating planet, I come back to the story I don’t fully remember. Simply put, life isn’t meant to be lived that way.

As the strains of Van Halen’s hit song ‘Jump’ welcome viewers to the world of Ready Player One, a camera snakes through an apartment complex created out of trailers crudely stacked like Jenga blocks (see picture above).  It focuses on the top trailer before panning down to reveal individuals playing tennis, shadow boxing, and pole dancing while wearing virtual reality goggles. The dystopian nightmare revealed in the last paragraphs of the story I can’t fully remember is on full display.

But is there hope?

Ernest Cline’s book Ready Player One, a massively geeky love letter about the 1980s wrapped in virtuality, sold so well that Steven Spielberg chose to direct a big-budget film based on it.  The end result is a movie that is noticeably different from the book yet somehow works well enough that people will come in droves to watch.

Here’s the basic premise: An eccentric video game programmer named James Halladay (Mark Rylance) created a virtual society called the Oasis, a place where anyone’s dreams could come true with a VR suit. Before he died, he hid three virtual keys that, when acquired, would lead one individual to an Easter egg and control of his company, valued at over a trillion dollars. For over a decade, nobody could find the first key.  But after Wade Watts (known in the Oasis as Parzival and played in the film by Tye Sheridan) is successful, it’s a race to complete the task before a company called IOI succeeds and takes Halladay’s company over for themselves. Along the way, Wade is helped by his online friends Aech (Lena Waithe), Sho (Philip Zhao), and Daito (Win Morisaki).  Then there’s Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), a wild but successful gunter (slang for egg hunter) who steals Wade’s heart. But are they who their unique avatars make them out to be?

Wade’s devoted most of his life to claiming the Easter egg, living the virtual life I read about in the story I opened this review with.  But when virtual blends with reality, real consequences happen. IOI discovers his real persona and attempts, through the wiles of Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), to convince Wade to join their team (known as the Sixers).  When he refuses, Sorrento blows up his real house, killing his aunt—and potentially others—in the process.  It is only then that Wade realizes physical life and virtual life aren’t the same.

As for the main aspects of the film . . . The virtual world was typical Spielberg, that is to say: well-polished, well-designed, and well-executed.  It was chock full of 1980s references that will take multiple viewings (or somebody putting it in a YouTube video) to catch. In the first five minutes, I picked up on Marvin the Martian and Hello Kitty.  Halladay’s library was incredible, as was the race for the first key (although the book is completely different in this aspect).

The real world was a mixed bag. I loved Rylance’s portrayal of the eccentric, quirky, yet charming Halladay. Cook does a great job with Art3mis, blending passion with feistiness and hidden charm.  My one issue comes with Wade.  Sheridan feels wooden and forced playing the real-life version of Parzival, giving him an unrealistic quality. However, his blonde haired-avatar fits in perfectly as a leader to the virtual world, unfettered by size or power.  Give Spielberg credit there. Regardless, this is a film that deserves to be seen regardless of what generation you come from.

There are a number of themes that can be discussed here (Halladay’s attempt at playing God [Genesis 1]; escaping one’s past; games people play; being one’s real self; people will rally to the right cause), but I’ll go with one.  There is a reason we need to be connected with others in real life.  VR isn’t as good as the Oasis (and may never be), but that doesn’t mean we need to spend every minute of every day staring at a phone or other form of technology. It might be fun to chat and mingle with people virtually, but in the end, all that’s left are memories. We were not designed by God to live 24/7 by ourselves (after all; he made Eve because it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone).  We need real people around us to support, encourage, and enjoy life with.  No matter how good VR graphics get, it’s simply not the same experience. Living life can be quite fun and invigorating.

Besides, in online communication, we have the ability to be who we want to be, not what we are in real life.  It’s why I get so frustrated with people on Facebook who always seem to have it perfectly together with constant selfies and successes. Real life is messy and struggles are as common as the sunrise.  A community allows us to be real, be honest, be ourselves.

Real life, with all of its challenges, trumps a virtual life every time.  And you don’t have to read a story to know that.

Foxcatcher: Wrestling with God

Foxcatcher is as difficult to write about as it was to watch. I have seen it three or four times now, and it does not lessen the difficulty of watching such a tense and dramatic film. Despite that, it is a great film, deserving every nomination for every film award it got! There is no other film like it. Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo all gave outstanding performances.

The difficulty of watching this film is that it is true.

Foxcatcher is the story of John du Pont (Steve Carell) whose desire to achieve something on his own draws him to sponsoring the US Olympic wrestling team in the 1980s. Du Pont knows nothing about wrestling, but it does not stop him. From the moment we meet du Pont, though we barely recognize Carell, we know that there is something not right.

The same could be said about Channing Tatum’s Mark Schultz. The trophies and metals in his apartment seem to stand as a memorial to what was in Mark’s life. Mark goes from making a speech to elementary school students about the Olympics to making a speech (prepared by du Pont’s people) about the father-figure that John du Pont has become in his life. These speeches stand in contrast to where Mark’s life has taken him.

John du Pont seeks out Mark to achieve his vision of being a part of a winning team. There are hints that he goes to Mark to get to his brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo), an experienced coach. In this attempt, John befriends Mark, making promises and sharing intimate stories. John sets himself up to be the father-figure that is missing in Mark’s life. Mark does not seek him out as a mentor; John positions himself to be such. On the way to the event where Mark is give a speech that John’s staffers wrote, John shares cocaine with Mark and teaches him how to use it. From there we see a decline in Mark.

There is something not right here.

Between the two of them, John and Mark fill the screen with emotional damage. This damage is so settled within their very core, that is difficult to see, yet it explains everything. After participating in drug use with John, Mark begins to change, which is depicted by his appearance. He dyes his hair and he dresses differently. He spirals into self-destruction.

After he loses a match that he should have won, Mark returns to his hotel room to grieve. What follows is one of the most intense scenes in the whole film. Without any words, the real wrestling in Mark’s soul is revealed.

Filled with anguish, Mark sends his head into a mirror, glass breaking. He orders carts full of food and stuffs his face. His nameless internal wrestling bursts forth. The fighting ends with Mark collapsing to the floor. This is how David finds him. Bloodied. Defeated. Full of carbs. The wounds can be bandaged. The carbs can be handled. David puts his attention on Mark’s battered soul.

In the shadows of the hotel room, Mark is curled up on the bed, with David bent over him. As they do when they wrestle, they become one lump. David says to his younger brother, “You’re not in this alone.”

When you are in your darkest moment, dwelling in the shadows of life, there is nothing more meaningful than someone whispering, “You’re not in this alone.”

In the Hebrew Bible, Jacob wrestled with an angel (Genesis 32) all through the night. Some have suggested that the angel represented God and the wrestling was over whom God was calling Jacob to be: Israel – the father of a nation. In Romans 7, Paul describes a fight with himself – “I do the things I know I shouldn’t do and I don’t do the things I know I should do.” In Ephesians 6, Paul says that the struggle we go through is not one of flesh and blood, but one with the spiritual forces of wickedness.

We wrestle with God, with ourselves, and with forces of injustice. 

The beauty of the film is that it does not state the obvious. We do not know for certain why Mark is emotionally damaged. Nor do we know why John is, though the film leaves clues as to why they may be. So often that is the case. We see others wrestling with their inner selves, not knowing why. We can, however, say to them, “You’re not in this alone.”
