Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) are competitive, unlike anyone you know… I think. They compete at everything, loving games, and drawing their friends into competition, too. But when Brooks (Kyle Chandler), Max’s older brother, rolls into town, their group of friends embarks on a murder mystery night that unravels as Brooks is kidnapped by very bad men. Because of the murder mystery, and the estranged relationship between Max and Brooks, it takes awhile for the group to catch on to what’s going on – to hilarious and sometimes dangerous points.
Game Night?takes a little while to get rolling, but when it does, it’s hilarious. Like a mash-up of?Date Night?and?The Game, we see two pretty ordinary people and their friends (Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, and Kylie Bunbury) get thrown into violent, extraordinary situations in pursuit of a Faberge egg. Michael C. Hall, Danny Huston, and Jesse Plemons round out some actors playing against type, tongue-in-cheek in ridiculous settings. Did I mention, it’s hilarious?
Special features on the Warner Bros. Blu-ray combo pack include a gag reel and the making of featurette. All of this adds to the general energy in the film, the pent-up rage that Max has over his brother’s success when they were younger and the sibling rivalry that now gets played out through gunfire and hijinks. You may find yourself considering how you feel about your own siblings, but you won’t want to invite them over for a game night anytime soon.
