In the continuation of HBO’s hit television show,?Entourage The Movie?follows Vince Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his three friends, Eric “E” Murphy (Kevin Connolly), Turtle Assante (Jerry Ferrara), and Johnny “Drama” Chase (Kevin Dillon), in their attempt to make the transition to directing a film (and starring) after his marriage breaks apart.
When Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) returns from his self-imposed hiatus to Hollywood, it presents Chase with an opportunity to nail down his next accomplishment in a (fictional) movie,?Hyde. All of this lays down a backdrop for the wild and ridiculous hijinks that the crew finds themselves involved in, like The Hangover?solely focused on having sex and making a name in the business.?E’s ex-girlfriend, Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui), is having a baby; Turtle is infatuated with Ronda Rousey; Lloyd (Rex Lee) is getting married. Oh yeah, and the film is millions of dollars over budget.
The threat to the movie allows director, producer, and creator of the television show, Doug Ellin, to give an ironic look behind-the-scenes at the way dollars are spent to make a movie. We see this in the crew’s interaction with investor Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton) and his son, Travis (Haley Joel Osment), that provide the straight man tension to the film. [Unfortunately, the audience may not actually care about this aspect!]
All of this is just a backdrop to allow us to see David Spade, New England Patriots’ Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, rapper T.I., Piers Morgan, Gary Busey, Mark Wahlberg, Andrew Dice Clay, and a host of others who were potentially salivating at being part of the theatrical version of the hit show.
Of course, this is ultimately a self-serving look at Hollywood. For all of the exposure that these guys get, and with all of their problematic decisions, it ends up coming up roses for them. When Chase tells the other guys that he got divorced because he was still trying to find himself, and that everything would work out because they can get the wedding annulled, there’s a reminder that not everyone sees marriage, relationships, or anything else as?sacred. Watching?Entourage, I see a bunch of guys who never grow up, who live only in the here and now for themselves, and who ultimately fail to show any signs of growth. Sure, they’re just characters but ultimately, don’t we want more in life than that?
Entourage is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Special features include the ‘Making of?Hyde‘ (the fictional movie within the movie), and several takes at what the crew is all about (‘The Gang- Still Rockin’ It’ and ‘Hollywood Baby!’)
